Obama Recommends Patient Directives For All

Obama recommends Patient Directives for all, Jul. 29, 2009.

In an AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) Call-in,Write-in Town Hall Meeting 7/29/09, President Obama, probably as the first Head of State anywhere, urges all citizens to consider preparing a Patient Directive stating their end-of-life preferences. He unequivocably stated that whatever choice the individual makes was not a matter for the doctor, the family, the lawyers or the state in anyway to unduly influence or disregard, but must always remain the personal preference of the individual and is to be respected as such. In answer to a question Obama said that with passage of his health care reform plan, the insured would be encouraged to sit down with their personal physician to discuss and discuss their end-of-life preference. Doctors would be duly reimbursed by the health care program/insurance for taking adequate time for this consultation.

On a more personal note, the President added, that while he and his wife Michelle, did not quite fit the category of Seniors as yet, they both had already prepared a Patient Directive. The AARP has about 40 million members and is considered one of the most powerful lobbies of this country.
