Dying With Dignity Victoria (DWDV) welcomes the tabling of reforms to Victoria’s Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Act 2017, a vital step toward more compassionate, equitable end-of-life care for Victorians facing intolerable suffering. We commend the Victorian Labor Government for advancing this crucial legislation and reaffirming its commitment to dignity, autonomy and justice for those at the end-of-life.
These critical reforms are grounded in the recent findings of the Department of Health’s independent five-year review of Victoria’s VAD legislation, which confirmed the system is operating safely and as intended, while identifying key areas for improvement.
These reforms will make a meaningful difference to Victorians facing untreatable, painful and terminal illnesses.
Congratulations must go to DWDV and friends for their tireless advocacy for changes to the law; to the researchers and writers of the five year review; to the brave individuals who shared moving experiences with loved ones at the end of life, highlighting the persuasive power of stories; and to those politicians who listened with empathy and attention.
While there is still more to be done, this is a milestone to be celebrated. These proposed reforms are sensible, compassionate and backed by national and global evidence. We urge all parties to support their passage.
