Rory Godbold - Board Member

I am a writer and teacher. I hold a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts (Acting) from the Victorian College of the Arts, a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of Melbourne, and a Master of Education in Leadership and Management, focussing on Equity, Diversity and Social Change. My writing focuses on personal stories within political debates and my debut play When The Light Leaves, which follows a family grappling with a loved one's wish to die on their own terms, was nominated for the Green Room Award for Best Writing in Independent Theatre after multiple acclaimed seasons in Melbourne and regional Victoria. My second play, Code of Conduct, won the 2022 Midsumma Queer Playwriting Award.

My family's experience of end of life choice, including the death of my father and advocate Ray Godbold, featured in Andrew Denton's Better Off Dead. That experience first drew me into this work. I am now a Young Ambassador for Dying With Dignity Victoria, and have campaigned for VAD legislation, in 2019 and again during the 2025 reforms. I am passionate about end of life choice, including questions of who can access VAD and under what conditions, and hope to bring both my lived experience and my creative practice to DWDV's ongoing work.RoryGodbold2026_A.jpg
