Inquiry into End of Life Choices

The report for the Inquiry into End of Life Choices was tabled in the Victorian Parliament on the morning of Thursday 9 June.

This will be the closest that Victoria has come to legalising voluntary assisted dying in almost a decade. If this inquiry influences the Victorian Parliament to pass legislation, it will give Victorians who are faced with terminal or advanced incurable illness or enduring intolerable suffering the choice to end their suffering on their own terms.

Advance Care Planning legislation

The Victorian department of Health and Human Services has released a position paper detailing their plans for a new legislative framework medical treatment decision making.

The proposed Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act aims to:

  • Provide Victorians with a new process for medical treatment decision making in line with contemporary views about how people participate in decisions about their own medical treatment.
  • Simplify the existing legal framework for medical treatment decision making and ensure statutory recognition of advance care directives for current and future conditions.
  • Support existing efforts in implementing advance care planning.

You can view the position paper and leave feedback by clicking through to the Health and Human Services website. The deadline for feedback is 4pm Friday 29 July, 2016.
