Daughter Guilty of Aged Care Manslaughter

A NSW Supreme Court Jury, after deliberating for 3 days, handed down a guilty of manslaughter verdict in the case of a woman who administered to her elderly mother a lethal dose of drugs. Her mother suffered from severe dementia and other comorbidities. There has been a lot of public reaction to this case and a quick glance at social media comments indicates a groundswell of sympathy for the daughter. Sentencing will be announced on May 20.

Barbara Eckersley never denied adding so called “green dream” drugs to her mother’s soup, but said she did not intend to kill her.

The New South Wales Supreme Court jury deliberated for just under three days before handing down their verdict on Thursday morning.

They found Eckersley was not guilty of murder, but the lesser charge of manslaughter, after the court heard she had been depressed about her mother’s ill health.
